Sun Cellular sustained its positive streak as it registered a 17% growth in its net service revenues for the first quarter of 2012 of Php4.2B compared with Php3.6B for the same period last year. This is the highest growth rate for any local telco this year.

Sun Cellular President and Chief Executive Officer Orlando Vea attributes the strong growth to the positive response of the market to the continued improvement of Sun’s network powered by synergies with parent company, PLDT. “We are elated by the market’s continued take-up of Sun’s services, and they can expect even better products and services to be offered to ensure that this momentum will be sustained,” he says.

Revenue from Sun Cellular’s postpaid segment in the first quarter of 2012 grew by 20% compared with the same period last year. 2G postpaid subscribers at the end of March increased to 1.41 million, up 26% from 1.12 million in the same period last year. According to Sun Cellular’s Chief Operating Officer Charles Lim, this is largely because of new subscriptions to higher plans such as the Plan 450 Call and Surf, and the introduction of innovative new postpaid plans like the Plan 250 launched in selected areas in Luzon and Mindanao. “The timing of the launch of these new plans was great as it was complemented by the stronger network that we now have,” Lim explains.

Plan 450 Call and Surf gives customers with smartphones allows unlimited calling and texting within the Sun network plus 20 hours of free mobile internet access so they can maximize the use of their gadget. The Plan 250 is a special postpaid subscription plan for specific regions. These plans, which are more affordable compared to mainstream product offerings, entice would-be subscribers with the free handset that comes with it.

Lim further shared that the prepaid market continues to be robust for Sun Cellular as this segment grew by 10% percent in the first quarter to Php2.2B compared with Php2B for the same period last year. “Since our network has improved, our subscribers are starting to use their line more often. Consequently, people are starting to load in higher denominations such as our Text Unlimited 150 and 200. Also, our newly-launched “TRIO” bucket loads that allow calling and texting among Sun, Smart, and Talk and Text subscribers at affordable rates are picking-up in terms of demand” Lim explained.

Lim also revealed that wireless broadband business continued to perform strongly, registering a 54% rise in net service revenues to Php487.1 million for the first quarter this year. “Our broadband subscriber base at the end of March climbed by 54% for postpaid subscribers and 73% for prepaid subscribers respectively compared with the same period last year. We are expecting these numbers to rise steadily given the market’s greater demand for mobility.”

He further shared that Sun Cellular started offering SIM-only plans to cater to subscribers who want to use Sun Cellular’s broadband service in their various gadgets, in anticipation of the continuing growing demand for broadband access.

When PLDT acquired Sun Cellular from the JG Summit group last year, it made a commitment to continue offering the unlimited products and services that Sun Cellular has always been known for. In addition, initiatives to integrate the PLDT, Smart and Sun networks are being pursued to support these service offerings. “We would like to make sure that our existing and potential subscribers are able to take advantage of the synergies available within the PLDT group, and we are very glad that these are starting to pay off,” Lim concluded.

As of yesterday I noticed a small toolbar below the lower right screen of the browser.

From a user experience it annoys me; I’m unable to read the text I’m browsing, I also find it quite difficult what to click – it covers the background beneath of what I’m reading – it suddenly pops out of nowhere, the bad news it can’t be removed or disabled by any other technical means.

Leading telecommunications company Globe Telecom, pioneering incubator Kickstart Ventures, Inc., web engineering firms Proudcloud and Dynamic Objx, and innovative educator MINT College, once again bring the much-anticipated Startup Weekend to the Philippines in 2012, to generate breakthrough ideas from tech communities in key cities of the country.

Startup Weekend Manila, which is in its second year, will be held on April 27-29 at MINT College in Bonifacio Global City, Taguig. Next in line is Cebu which is scheduled on May 11-13, with other cities/events planned later in the year. Startup Weekend is a 54-hour competition where developers, designers, marketers, technopreneurs, and venture capitalists come together to share ideas, form teams, build products, and launch startup businesses.

“Globe believes in giving opportunities to everyone with the skills and burning desire to turn their bright ideas into viable businesses. Startup Weekend Manila is the venue for those who have a passion for innovation and who want to be part of a global movement towards reshaping our economic future,” said Minette Navarrete, Head of Globe New Business Group and President of Kickstart Ventures, Inc.

Startup Weekends are designed for entrepreneurs interested in receiving feedback for an idea, looking for co-founders, or who want to learn a new skill, especially in the field of mobile and internet applications. The concept, which started in theUS, is now a global movement, taking digital start-up businesses from ideas to investment readiness through intensive mentoring from industry experts and access to markets and investors across Asia.

Participants get acquainted with one another starting Friday night. They pitch startup concepts they are passionate about, and form teams around the most popular ideas. They refine their ideas and business plans and start building product prototypes with the help of the onsite mentors, and then present what they have accomplished in a 4-minute pitch and demo by Sunday evening.

Startup Weekend Manila 2011 was one of the most attended among all Startup Weekends worldwide. It saw almost triple the expected number of participants, making the organizers increase the number of events and cities for this year, and expand available slots to 200 participants for this year’s Manila run.

Startup Weekend Manila 2011 winner HobbyMash – the preformed team of Liezl Buenaventura, Josh Liao, Rafael Oca and Mark Co – came away with a SGD15,000 startup fund and enrolment in a 100-Day Startup Bootcamp in Singapore, led by SingTel Innov8 (the corporate venture arm of leading telecoms provider SingTel) and Joyful Frog Digital Incubator (JFDI). They presented in Demo Asia 2012, and are working towards the 2012 Demo Day this May.

Aside from the Philippines, Startup Weekends this year will also be held in France, Singapore, Argentina, Canada, USA, Norway, UK, Denmark, Mexico, Italy, Palestine, Senegal, Taiwan, Hungary, Australia, Lithuania, Algeria, Ireland, Switzerland, Martinique, Tunisia, and Spain, China, India, Brazil, Chile, Czech Republic, Belarus, Poland, Turkey, Uganda, Kosovo, Slovakia, Bulgaria, Germany, Peru, Moldova, Croatia, Cambodia, Egypt, Bolivia, and the Netherlands.

Parties interested in Startup Weekend Manila can register via http://manila.startupweekend.org until April 25, or while slots are available. To know more about Startup Weekend Manila, visit www.manila.startupweekend.org.

After announcing that it has strengthened its network reach in Mindanao, Sun Cellular now unveils its newest prepaid load variant exclusive to its subscribers in the area – The Sun TextALL 15 for Mindanao. The newest load variant comes with unlimited texts to all networks for two days for just 15 pesos

“This is our way of thanking our Mindanao subscribers for continuously patronizing our services. Their high demand for our products prompted us to further improve our services in their area and we are looking at this new load variant, to complement the strengthened network coverage in the region,” says Joan Duenas, Sun Cellular’s Vice President for Prepaid Marketing.

Early this year, Sun Cellular further widened its coverage area in Mindanao, through the facilities of its new mother company PLDT. Further improved network signal can now be felt in the areas of Lanao del Norte and Lanao del Sur, Basilan, Camiguin, Zamboanga, Tawi-Tawi, Dinagat Island, Compostela Valley, Sulu, parts of Bukidnon, Cagayan de Oro and Davao del Sur among others.

“We chose Mindanao as the area for our initial phase of service expansion because we want our subscribers in the area to optimize their experience of our unlimited call and text service, as well as the value-for money bucket loads that we have been providing our subscribers nationwide,” Duenas adds.

As the very first area to benefit from initial phase of service expansion, we are happy knowing that our subscribers in Mindanao will now get to enjoy an optimized experience of Sun’s unlimited call and text services as well as the value-for-money bucket loads that we have been providing our subscribers nationwide,”

Duenas adds.

Duenas explains subscribers can easily avail of the Sun TextALL 15 load variant as it is available via load conversion and through Sun XpressLoad retailers.
“Given the immense demand for Sun Cellular”s best-value services in Mindanao, we have specifically chosen the region as our pilot area for this subscription plan offering,” says Ricky Pena, Senior Vice President for Postpaid and New Business.

For only Php250.00 per month, subscribers to this new postpaid plan includes unlimited Sun-to-Sun texts, four hours of Sun-to-Sun calls, 500 texts to other networks plus a free Samsung E1080 phone. This plan is perfect for those who want to enjoy unlimited texting and still be able to call their friends and loved ones from time to time. Also with the generous allocation of texts to other networks, this plan will also attract those who want to stay in touch but do not want to spend too much.

Sun Cellular has been the preferred choice of over 50% of new postpaid plan subscribers for the past 5 years. Its postpaid subscriber base continues to grow steadily increasing by more than 30% year over year in January of 2012 versus the same period last year.

“This 2012, we are focusing on boosting our network signal strength by augmenting and optimizing our existing cell sites, and taking advantage of synergies with our sister companies in the PLDT Group. Our extensive network strengthening campaign will be complimented with products that best suit the needs of the locals in the areas we are expanding to,” Pena revealed.

Pena also expressed his confidence on the widened coverage in Mindanao. “As we move to further establishing a more extensive network, our subscribers in Mindanao may now enjoy our best-value postpaid plans in areas where before we were not present,” he adds. “This will also benefit customers in other areas outside Mindanao as they can now get in touch with their family and other loved ones in the new areas we are now in using their Sun Cellular lines.”

The first wave of these network enhancement efforts are now being felt in the areas of Lanao del Norte and Lanao del Sur, Basilan, Camiguin, Zamboanga, Tawi-Tawi, Dinagat Island, Compostella Valley, Sulu, Bukidnon, Cagayan de Oro, Davao del Sur, among others.

Sun Cellular Chief Operating Officer Charles Lim says they will be strengthening their network coverage in areas of Mindanao to include Lanao del Norte and Lanao del Sur, Basilan, Camiguin, Zamboanga, Tawi-Tawi, Dinagat Island, Compostela Valley, Sulu, parts of Bukidnon, Cagayan de Oro and Davao del Sur among others . “The demand for our best-value products and services in Mindanao is immense, hence we prioritized this region in the initial phase of our network enhancement program for 2012,” he explained.

Lim added, “Sun is improving its signal strength in Mindanao to provide its subscribers wider network coverage and more reliable service especially in key areas in the region such as Davao, General Santos, and Cagayan de Oro. We want those in Mindanao to optimize their experience of our unlimited call and text service, as well as the value-for money bucket load and postpaid plans that Sun has been providing its subscribers nationwide.”

Sun Cellular has been known for its best value product offering such as the Text Unlimited 150 which allows customers to text other Sun subscribers unlimited for 30 days and the Text Unlimited 200 which also includes 500 texts to other networks aside from the 30-day unlimited Sun-to-Sun texts. “Mindanao is an important market for us. Local and national officials from the region have been sending us letters on behalf of their constituents and we’d just like to say we have heeded their call ,” Lim enthused.

Lim revealed that the Mindanao network improvement will just be the initial salvo of network enhancement programs that Sun has lined-up this year. “We will be augmenting our existing 6,000 plus cell sites and will further strengthen coverage which will also be felt in the areas of North Luzon and the Visayas region, wherever there is a demand for Sun’s affordable communication products and services,” he said.

This will include improving indoor coverage through the use of in-building solutions and high gain antennae in strategic locations. The network improvement program also involves optimizing exisiting cellsites to boost both 2G and 3G signals.

Being a key market and focus area for Globe, Davao City was tapped for the implementation of the network change-out beginning December last year, resulting in doubled mobile telephony capacity in the area to support growing customer demand and improvements in voice and SMS service quality.

The network modernization program, touted as the most significant investment of Globe in the last two decades, includes an all-IP infrastructure, pervasive 3G coverage, double fiber optics capacity, 4G and LTE readiness, and overall quality and resiliency.

Once completed, Globe envisions a robust and resilient network that can provide an unparalleled customer experience to truly set the company apart from competition. The new Globe network and IT systems are not only designed to address all current customer needs but would also have the capacity and capability for more sophisticated use of mobile and broadband technologies.

With the telecom industry worldwide evolving at a breakneck speed, it has become imperative for local players to stay competitive and up-to-date with the latest developments. Thus, Globe constantly pushes its underlying infrastructure capabilities to much higher levels so as to touch both consumers and industries in new and progressive ways.

The unprecedented undertaking will modernize all layers of the Globe network within the next five years and is anticipated to set the industry benchmark for the most technologically advanced network in the Philippines. It is expected to bring aggressive growth prospects, savings in capital spending and expenses, as well as operational efficiencies from the synergy among Globe and its partners, Huawei and Alcatel-Lucent. Together bound by vision and resolve, the three companies are committed to instrumentally deliver a superior customer experience for the benefit of the consuming public.

At a higher level, Globe network modernization program also serves to broaden the telecommunications horizon of the Philippines as its corollary infrastructure expansion and service innovation stands to attract investment and business. Globe is effectively raising the bar of technology and service in the industry to make it at par with the world’s most advanced telecom communities and practices.

The Globe network and IT transformation program is an ambitious and yet necessary undertaking which will provide the platform that will make Globe even more competitive in the fast-moving market.

THE Davao City Council approved on first reading a proposal of the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) to make the entire Davao City and some immediate localities as wireless internet fidelity (Wifi) zone.

Councilor Pilar Braga, chair of the City Council committee on energy, transportation and communication, said the proposed Wireless Wide Area Network for Davao City aims to establish a wireless network to cover the whole city by providing voice, data, and video connectivity.

In Tuesday’s regular session of the City Council, Braga said one of the core benefits of the proposal is to link all emergency and disaster response units of Davao City in order to improve emergency responses during calamities.

Should the technology materialize, data from the Central 911, all police stations, fire stations, and barangays, among others can be easily accessed for a better emergency response.

On top of this, Braga said possible calamities like floods, heavy rains, among others can be easily forecasted and disseminated to avoid damages.

“There is really a merit to this proposed system, and we will look into it very clearly,” Braga said.

Braga is still clueless on the financial aspect of the proposed project like how much the government would pour in and the city’s counterpart.

The four components of the system include wireless communications backbone, public safety infrastructure, and wireless wide area data network.

The following are the four components along with their technical features: Wireless Communications Backbone — internet protocol (IP) radios at 5GHz located at selected highly elevated areas, digital two-way repeaters for voice and data applications, and IP radios set as far as 60 kilometers apart providing bandwidth around 100mbps; Public Safety Infrastructure — automatic vehicle locators, video surveillance, and alarms monitoring and control; Public Safety Infrastructure (possible disasters and natural hazards) — inclement weather, early warning, information display; Wireless Wide Area Data Network — voice on internet phone (VOIP), video conferencing, and wide area network data access.

The same proposed system will be scheduled for public hearings starting next week.

An Android developer recently discovered a clandestine application called Carrier IQ built into most smartphones that doesn’t just track your location; it secretly records your keystrokes, and there’s nothing you can do about it. Is it time to put on a tinfoil hat? That depends on how you feel about privacy.

The reason for this invasive Android app seems reasonable enough at face value. Even though it’s on most Android, BlackBerry and Nokia devices, most users would never know that Carrier IQ is running in the background, and that’s sort of the point. Described on the company’s website as software to gain “unprecedented insight into their customers’ mobile experience,” Carrier IQ is ostensibly supposed to help mobile carriers and device manufacturers gather data in order to improve their products.

Tons of applications do this, and you’re probably used to those boxes that pops up on your screen and ask if you want to help the company by sending your data back to them. If you’re concerned about your privacy, you just tap no and go about your merry computing way. As security-conscious Android developer Trevor Eckhart realized, however, Carrier IQ does not give you this option, and unless you were code-savvy and looking for it, you’d never know it was there. And based on how aggressive the company has been in trying to keep Eckhart quiet about his discovery, it seems like Carrier IQ doesn’t want you to know it’s there either.

Eckhart first raised a red flag about Carrier IQ about two weeks ago when he started investigating reports that a software update on the HTC EVO 3D included “user behavior logging” code. The company sent Eckhart a cease-and-desist letter demanding that he keep his mouth shut and threatening legal action. But after the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) took a look at the case and determined that Eckhart was working within his First Amendment rights, it backed off but still denied that they recorded keystrokes.
This week, Eckhart fired back with a 17-minute long video showing in painstaking detail how much data CarrierIQ collects, effectively undercutting the company’s denial. It was even logging contents of text messages! Wired posted the video on Tuesday night and cemented its status “as one of nine reasons to wear a tinfoil hat.” The magazine explains how CarrierIQ even undercuts other companies’ security measures:

The video shows the software logging Eckhart’s online search of “hello world.” That’s despite Eckhart using the HTTPS version of Google which is supposed to hide searches from those who would want to spy by intercepting the traffic between a user and Google. … It’s not even clear what privacy policy covers this. Is it Carrier IQ’s, your carrier’s or your phone manufacturer’s? And, perhaps, most important, is sending your communications to Carrier IQ a violation of the federal government’s ban on wiretapping?

Oh, we’re definitely in tinfoil hat territory now. CarrierIQ and the carriers have yet to respond to the latest claims — we’re doing our best to chase them down — but if past smartphone tracking scandals are any precedent, they could end up answering to Congress.

Like many things in life, there are a couple of different ways to think about smartphone tracking. One way approaches privacy from a forward-thinking, technology-trusting and, heck, even progressive perspective. GPS-equipped smartphones are incredibly powerful tools that enables mankind to do all kinds of amazing things, thanks to the perpetual stream of data from the Internet. However, that stream runs both ways, and sometimes, the folks that build and maintain the network sometimes need to monitor your data in order to improve the technology. Who wouldn’t want better service?

This brings us to the second approach. Tracking is creepy. In an Orwellian kind of way, it makes people nervous — especially Americans — that the government or the corporations or the system is closing in on them and stealing their freedom. Of course, not everybody feels so strongly about privacy, but as long as you can opt out, it’s fine. Last week, Sen. Charles Schumer spoke out about a program at some malls in Virginia and Southern California that were anonymously tracking shoppers’ movements by tracking their cell phone signals, and the only way to opt was by not going to the mall. Schumer did not approve. “Personal cell phones are just that — personal,” the New York senator said in a statement. ”If retailers want to tap into your phone to see what your shopping patterns are, they can ask you for your permission to do so.”

The CarrierIQ software is not dissimilar to the shopper tracking program. In fact, it’s arguably worse since it follows you everywhere. In the age of social media, everybody is becoming increasingly aware of and often angry about the amount of private data companies are scooping up with or without their consent. This week, the Federal Trade Commission and Facebook came to an agreement that the social network must make all of their new programs opt-in so as not to break the law by violating users’ privacy. Even Mark Zuckerberg admitted in a sincere-sounding blog post that his company had “made a bunch of mistakes” on the privacy front in the past. He went on to detail how “offering people control over the information they share online” was a top priority. This is Mark “Privacy is Over” Zuckerberg we’re talking about here. With Facebook reportedly building its own mobile phone platform, wouldn’t it be super ironic if people started defecting from the Android army and switching to the Facebook phone in the name of privacy?

MANILA, Philippines – Leading telecommunications firm Philippine Long Distance Telephone Co. (PLDT) announced the availability for the first direct-to-the-home (DTTH) fiber Internet service in the country, enabling speeds of up to 100Mbps for home users.

Dubbed PLDT Fibr, the telco’s new service brings the first fiber-optic cable connection to homes in Metro Manila. It is the result of years of pilot-testing in areas with high-bandwidth requirements, as well as the company’s investment in fiber-based backhaul.

“PLDT Fibr will give our subscribers the ultimate multi-screen, multi-media experience,” said PLDT President and Chief Executive Napoleon L. Nazareno. ”You can expect crystal-clear high-definition content on your HDTV as well as hassle-free simultaneous high-speed browsing.”

Initially, the service is available to subscribers in high-income subdivisions in Metro Manila, such as Forbes Park and Urdaneta Village in Makati, Palms Pointe in Alabang, Wack Wack Village in Mandaluyong, and all Valle Verde Villages in Pasig.

An 8Mbps plan from the service costs P3,500 per month, while a 15Mbps plan is available for P6,500 a month. A 100Mbps plan is also available for P20,000 a month.

“Those seeking to upgrade their current Internet access would do well to look into the extra perks of switching to fiber optic technology,” said Eric Alberto, senior vice president at PLDT .

Fiber Internet uses fiber optic technology, which transmits data via light signals sent through hair-thin strands of pure glass. Instead of the usual copper going to the homes of customers, thin fiber optic cables will be used.

The new platform will be able to deliver simultaneously voice, video and data services at much higher speeds and larger capacities than DSL or cable technologies, the telco said.

Just recently, the company began work for its new undersea cable system called the Asia Submarine-cable Express (ASE) (InterAksyon.com related story), a vital 7,200-kilometer system meant to provide seamless interconnection with other major cable systems connecting the United States, Europe, the Middle East and other parts of Asia.

The facility is expected to expand by more than twice over the existing international bandwidth capacity of PLDT when it is completed in the third quarter of 2012.

It is seen to enable PLDT and its group of companies, including Smart and newly acquired Digitel and Sun, to serve the increasing bandwidth requirements of their combined customer base.

_____

TV5, where InterAksyon.com is the online news portal, is part of the PLDT group of companies.

I’ve noticed that some url of individual sites have an increase of pagerank status so does the individual pages and blog posts.

The pagerank of geekyfaust.info still remains the same no changes at all but the makeityourring diamond engagement rings post was previously PR3 is now PR4 probably because of the extra gain of backlinks and unique content it has.

Food Blog Philippines was previously PR1 is now enjoying PR3 is thanking for new updates on its posts.

To verify your pagerank statuses kindly visit prchecker.info or better yet check your sites simultaneously by visiting this
