An Android developer recently discovered a clandestine application called Carrier IQ built into most smartphones that doesn't just track your location; it secretly records your keystrokes, and there's nothing you can do about it. Is it time to put on a tinfoil hat? That depends on how you feel about privacy.

The reason for this invasive Android app seems reasonable enough at face value. Even though it's on most Android, BlackBerry and Nokia devices, most users would never know that Carrier IQ is running in the background, and that's sort of the point. Described on the company's website as software to gain "unprecedented insight into their customers' mobile experience," Carrier IQ is ostensibly supposed to help mobile carriers and device manufacturers gather data in order to improve their products.

Tons of applications do this, and you're probably used to those boxes that pops up on your screen and ask if you want to help the company by sending your data back to them. If you're concerned about your privacy, you just tap no and go about your merry computing way. As security-conscious Android developer Trevor Eckhart realized, however, Carrier IQ does not give you this option, and unless you were code-savvy and looking for it, you'd never know it was there. And based on how aggressive the company has been in trying to keep Eckhart quiet about his discovery, it seems like Carrier IQ doesn't want you to know it's there either.

Eckhart first raised a red flag about Carrier IQ about two weeks ago when he started investigating reports that a software update on the HTC EVO 3D included "user behavior logging" code. The code had worried some geek bloggers when it showed up a couple months ago, but HTC and Sprint insisted that it wasn't much different than normal error-logging software and certainly didn't gather granular data like "contents of messages, photos, videos, etc." Eckhart wrote an exhaustive blog post about his startling findings -- CarrierIQ collected lots data, including keystrokes, and there way for the user to opt out "without advanced knowledge" -- and CarrierIQ flipped out. The company sent Eckhart a cease-and-desist letter demanding that he keep his mouth shut and threatening legal action. But after the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) took a look at the case and determined that Eckhart was working within his First Amendment rights, it backed off but still denied that they recorded keystrokes.
This week, Eckhart fired back with a 17-minute long video showing in painstaking detail how much data CarrierIQ collects, effectively undercutting the company's denial. It was even logging contents of text messages! Wired posted the video on Tuesday night and cemented its status "as one of nine reasons to wear a tinfoil hat." The magazine explains how CarrierIQ even undercuts other companies' security measures:

The video shows the software logging Eckhart’s online search of “hello world.” That’s despite Eckhart using the HTTPS version of Google which is supposed to hide searches from those who would want to spy by intercepting the traffic between a user and Google. … It’s not even clear what privacy policy covers this. Is it Carrier IQ’s, your carrier’s or your phone manufacturer’s? And, perhaps, most important, is sending your communications to Carrier IQ a violation of the federal government’s ban on wiretapping?

Oh, we're definitely in tinfoil hat territory now. CarrierIQ and the carriers have yet to respond to the latest claims -- we're doing our best to chase them down -- but if past smartphone tracking scandals are any precedent, they could end up answering to Congress.

Like many things in life, there are a couple of different ways to think about smartphone tracking. One way approaches privacy from a forward-thinking, technology-trusting and, heck, even progressive perspective. GPS-equipped smartphones are incredibly powerful tools that enables mankind to do all kinds of amazing things, thanks to the perpetual stream of data from the Internet. However, that stream runs both ways, and sometimes, the folks that build and maintain the network sometimes need to monitor your data in order to improve the technology. Who wouldn't want better service?

This brings us to the second approach. Tracking is creepy. In an Orwellian kind of way, it makes people nervous -- especially Americans -- that the government or the corporations or the system is closing in on them and stealing their freedom. Of course, not everybody feels so strongly about privacy, but as long as you can opt out, it's fine. Last week, Sen. Charles Schumer spoke out about a program at some malls in Virginia and Southern California that were anonymously tracking shoppers' movements by tracking their cell phone signals, and the only way to opt was by not going to the mall. Schumer did not approve. "Personal cell phones are just that -- personal," the New York senator said in a statement. "If retailers want to tap into your phone to see what your shopping patterns are, they can ask you for your permission to do so."

The CarrierIQ software is not dissimilar to the shopper tracking program. In fact, it's arguably worse since it follows you everywhere. In the age of social media, everybody is becoming increasingly aware of and often angry about the amount of private data companies are scooping up with or without their consent. This week, the Federal Trade Commission and Facebook came to an agreement that the social network must make all of their new programs opt-in so as not to break the law by violating users' privacy. Even Mark Zuckerberg admitted in a sincere-sounding blog post that his company had "made a bunch of mistakes" on the privacy front in the past. He went on to detail how "offering people control over the information they share online" was a top priority. This is Mark "Privacy is Over" Zuckerberg we're talking about here. With Facebook reportedly building its own mobile phone platform, wouldn't it be super ironic if people started defecting from the Android army and switching to the Facebook phone in the name of privacy?

MANILA, Philippines – Leading telecommunications firm Philippine Long Distance Telephone Co. (PLDT) announced the availability for the first direct-to-the-home (DTTH) fiber Internet service in the country, enabling speeds of up to 100Mbps for home users.

Dubbed PLDT Fibr, the telco’s new service brings the first fiber-optic cable connection to homes in Metro Manila. It is the result of years of pilot-testing in areas with high-bandwidth requirements, as well as the company’s investment in fiber-based backhaul.

“PLDT Fibr will give our subscribers the ultimate multi-screen, multi-media experience,” said PLDT President and Chief Executive Napoleon L. Nazareno. ”You can expect crystal-clear high-definition content on your HDTV as well as hassle-free simultaneous high-speed browsing.”

Initially, the service is available to subscribers in high-income subdivisions in Metro Manila, such as Forbes Park and Urdaneta Village in Makati, Palms Pointe in Alabang, Wack Wack Village in Mandaluyong, and all Valle Verde Villages in Pasig.

An 8Mbps plan from the service costs P3,500 per month, while a 15Mbps plan is available for P6,500 a month. A 100Mbps plan is also available for P20,000 a month.

“Those seeking to upgrade their current Internet access would do well to look into the extra perks of switching to fiber optic technology,” said Eric Alberto, senior vice president at PLDT .

Fiber Internet uses fiber optic technology, which transmits data via light signals sent through hair-thin strands of pure glass. Instead of the usual copper going to the homes of customers, thin fiber optic cables will be used.

The new platform will be able to deliver simultaneously voice, video and data services at much higher speeds and larger capacities than DSL or cable technologies, the telco said.

Just recently, the company began work for its new undersea cable system called the Asia Submarine-cable Express (ASE) (InterAksyon.com related story), a vital 7,200-kilometer system meant to provide seamless interconnection with other major cable systems connecting the United States, Europe, the Middle East and other parts of Asia.

The facility is expected to expand by more than twice over the existing international bandwidth capacity of PLDT when it is completed in the third quarter of 2012.

It is seen to enable PLDT and its group of companies, including Smart and newly acquired Digitel and Sun, to serve the increasing bandwidth requirements of their combined customer base.

I love checking, reading local news like Sunstar Davao and Mindanao Daily Mirror, I usually search them using Google to check their site link structure - while doing my search with the keyword "Mindanao Times" I've noticed in the second paragraph of the search engine results - there's a dev sub-domain under mindanaotimes.net so it looks like this dev.mindanaotimes.net.

First: Looks like they're trying to overhaul or develop the new site from scratch.

Second: Overhaul could be a signal that they're trying to fix the first and third serp results - as you can see - it seems compromised according to our trusty google chrome browser.

Third: Their current use of WordPress from earlier content management system (cms) Drupal makes publishers and content editors easy to use, carry out and manage.

The number of job listings requesting HTML5, the latest version of the language used to display Web pages, increased 13-fold between the first and fourth quarters of last year, according to Indeed. "Twitter" and "jQuery," which is used in JavaScript programming, rounded out the top five fastest growing keywords.

Customers of Dice.com, a job board for tech professionals, expect cloud computing — which enables users to access programs and data stored online — and mobile-application development to be two of the quickest growing in-demand skill sets this year, said Tom Silver, senior vice president of North America for Dice Holdings Inc.

"Virtually all companies are figuring out how to make use of mobile apps and don't know how to do it as well as they need to," he said.

Even though competition is fierce, Mr. Silver said the competition hasn't yet translated into a significant salary increase for workers in those areas. According to a Dice survey released this month, the average tech worker salary increased only about 1% to $79,384 between 2009 and 2010.

Inigral Inc., a start-up based in San Francisco that builds private social networks for universities, is trying to find three software developers to add to its 12-member staff, said Chief Technology Officer George Deglin.

The company needs a front-end developer, familiar with the HTML and CSS programming languages, and a developer with experience using Ruby on Rails, which is used to develop Web applications.

Those skills are in demand to the degree that the company faces stiff competition from other small companies and larger start-ups like Twitter Inc., Mr. Deglin said.

"The landscape for hiring engineers right now is very difficult," he said. "We find almost nobody who we think as having the appropriate qualifications is unemployed."

LAS VEGAS (AFP) – Motorola Mobility's Xoom tablet computer powered by new "Honeycomb" software from Google was crowned the best gadget at the giant Consumer Electronics Show (CES) on Saturday.

Along with being declared the top creation at the dazzling gadget extravaganza, Xoom was also honored as the best of the scores of tablets introduced here as fresh competitors in a market dominated by Apple iPads.

Motorola also scored a victory with its Atrix smartphone designed to work with high-speed 4G wireless networks and which can be used in a dock to power a laptop.

Atrix won the top spot in a smartphone category at the official Best of CES awards.

"We took big risks and they paid off," said Motorola Mobility chief software engineer Seang Chau. "We didn't know if people would get it; but obviously they got it."

US telecom maker Motorola Mobility jumped into the bustling tablet computer market Wednesday when chief executive Sanjay Jha unveiled Xoom at CES.

Motorola Mobility's hotly awaited tablet computer, the "Xoom," will be available in the first quarter of the year, Jha said.

With a 10.1-inch (25.6-centimeter) screen, the Xoom is about the same size as Apple's iPad, which hit stores in April and has other leading technology companies around the world scrambling to catch up.

Xoom will be a fierce competitor in the marketplace because Google built Honeycomb software specifically to power tablet computers, according to Jha.

"This is really the next generation of tablets," Motorola Mobility device team head Alain Mutricy said as he held a Xoom in one hand at the awards ceremony.

"Our partnership with Google has been very intense and has enabled some great technology."

The CES accolades came just four days after Illinois-based Motorola split into two companies, Motorola Mobility and Motorola Solutions.

Motorola Mobility will focus on mobility, the Internet and computing markets while Motorola Solutions will target next-generation communications solutions to government, public safety and enterprise customers.

"This has been a great week for us," Mutricy said of Motorola Mobility. "It is a good beginning."

The official CES awards were sponsored by tech news website Cnet, which had editors pick the winners.

Japan-based Wii console maker Nintendo took top honors in a gaming category with a version of a DS videogame handset that allows 3D play without the need for special glasses.

A Sony "HandyCam" handheld video recorder with a built-in projector placed first in a Digital Imaging category, while a Casio Tryx digital camera was deemed the slickest gadget design at the show.

US chip giant Intel ot some of the spotlight, with a speedy new generation of "Sandy Bridge" chips that thwart film piracy and enable quick handling of data-rich video and games rated the best computer innovation at the show.

A Toyota Entune innovation that makes fun or helpful software applications available while driving won top spot in a car category.

A Vizio TV that features Internet television from Google and online videogames from OnLive was declared the best in its category.

A sleek Razor Switchblade laptop that packs desktop computer gaming power into a small "netbook" won a People's Voice award based on votes logged on the Internet.

Meanwhile, a dual-screen Acer Iconia laptop with a second screen, touch controlled, where a keyboard would usually be won "Last Gadget Standing" honors at another CES competition.

A color version of the Nook electronic reader was the favorite in online "Last Gadget Standing" voting.

SAN FRANCISCO, California, United States—Sony revealed on Monday that mobile phone game sensation "Angry Birds" is heading for the Japanese entertainment giant's PlayStation 3 consoles and PSP handheld videogame devices.

The addictive puzzle game in which players catapult birds to smash through structures protecting egg-stealing green pigs has rocketed to popularity since being released by Finland-based Rovio Mobile in late 2009.

"Angry Birds" will feature 63 levels, Sony said in a PlayStation blog message listing games set for release in the coming week.

Sony did not indicate the price it would charge for "Angry Birds."

THE National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) will allow Internet broadband service providers to cap the daily volume of data allowed per user. In a revised draft Memorandum Order (MO) on Minimum Speed of Broadband Connections, the NTC said that broadband service providers should specify the minimum broadband connection speed and service reliability, as well as the service rates in their advertisements, flyers, brochures and service and legal agreements.

Alongside the disclosure on minimum speeds and reliability, telecom companies however would be allowed to set a maximum volume of data allotted per subscriber per day.

The volume cap however should come with a service reliability of at least 80 percent.

The regulator said that the service reliability is measured over a period of one month and is derived by dividing the number of hours used in a day into the difference between hours used in a day and hours used below minimum connection speed in a day.

The NTC said the service offers should specify the service rates for a minimum roadband/Internet connection speed and the service reliability.

At P900 per month of subscription for 512 kbps (kilobytes per second) minimum connection speed, the service reliability should be 80 percent. At P1,000 a month for 512 kbps, the service reliability should be 85 percent.

The NTC said that the service providers may offer broadband/Internet connections on a ”best efforts” basis.

The draft MO also said service providers offering committed information rate (CIR) should comply with NTC Memorandum Circular No. 12-19-2004 or the Service Performance Standards for Internet Access Services and Wired Telecommunication Services.

Under this circular, the bandwidth throughput for Internet access is up to 98.5 percent.

For dial-up access, the telcos are mandated to deliver at least 80 percent of committed information status. For leased line access, this is higher at 99 percent.

”Failure on part of a broadband service provider to comply with the order, the Commission shall file appropriate administrative case against broadband service provider,” the NTC said.

The revised draft MO considered the inputs submitted by Digital Telecommunications Phils. Inc., Wi-Tribe
Telecoms Inc., Philippine Long Distance Telephone Co. Broadband Philippines Inc., Smart Communications and Globe Telecom.

Representatives of these telcos were unavailable for comment as of press time.

Gamaliel Cordoba, NTC commissioner, said the agency drafted a memorandum order on broadband speed to address the concern raised by the Department of Trade and Industry about the poor service of telcos.

Data from the NTC showed that complaints lodged against telcos reached 622 in the first nine months of the year. Of the total, more than half pertained to poor Internet connections.

Other consumer complaints ranged from erroneous billing to poor service, vanishing pre-paid load credits, e-load issues, and misleading promos.

NTC data showed that the country’s broadband subscribers stood at 3.6 million last year, up by 102.81 percent from 1.77 million in 2008.

The NTC projected broadband subscribers to grow by three digits in the next two to three years.

Even when Windows 7 launched into a warm reception (and brisk sales), Microsoft didn't reveal exact sale numbers for its new OS – until today.

Microsoft CFO Peter Klein announced at the Morgan Stanley Technology, Media & Telecom Conference that Windows 7 has sold 90 million licenses to-date.

Up until recently, Microsoft's company line when boasting about Windows 7 sales is that is the fastest selling operating system in history, but without any accompanying number.

This news comes just days after the expiration of the free use of Windows 7 Release Candidate.

Windows 7 is harder to hack than Apple's Snow Leopard--mainly due to Flash being installed by default on SL.

Security expert Charlie Miller has participated in the Pwn2Own contest over the last two years, and has won both times. Held in the CansecWest Conference in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, the contest challenges contestants to find "big bugs" in web browsers, operating systems, and even in mobile devices. With the 2010 conference just around the corner (March 24), oneITsecurity conducted an interview with the champ and asked Miller which was harder to crack: Windows 7 or Snow Leopard?

"Windows 7 is slightly more difficult because it has full ASLR (address space layout randomization) and a smaller attack surface (for example, no Java or Flash by default)," he said. "Windows used to be much harder because it had full ASLR and DEP (data execution prevention). But recently, a talk at Black Hat DC showed how to get around these protections in a browser in Windows."

He also added that a safe browsing combination would be to use Chrome or Internet Explorer 8 on Windows 7, however he said that there isn't enough difference between the two browsers to "get worked up about." But he did emphasize that Flash not be installed no matter what browser or OS is used by the consumer.

The interview also covered exploits on game consoles. As the interviewer points out, the devices are in our living rooms, in our dens and offices, yet there are still few exploits and vulnerabilities discovered. Why aren't security researchers working on finding exploits on these devices? Because there are more PCs, and game consoles don't need to be connected to the Internet.

"I’ve had Wii for a year or so and its never been on the Internet," Miller said. "Its hard to remotely attack the box when you can’t get packets to it Also, computers, and phones to a lesser extent, are designed to be customized, to download and use/render content from the Internet. This is where vulnerabilities exist and exploits are created. Game consoles don’t do this as much so the attack surface is much smaller. The final reason, is it is hard to do research on them. Its not easy to get a debugger running on an Xbox, for example."

With over a million downloads of WordPress 2.9, WordPress 2.9.1 has been released to address some technical issues and bugs which caused problems with scheduling of posts and pingbacks.
