Dyson V8: Cord-free. Hassle-free. Powerful suction.
Every vacuum cleaner uses a motor to generate suction. But not all motors are the same. Some cordless vacuum cleaners use small motors that can be weak, while others rely on heavy motors that can compromise versatility.
Thanks to the Dyson digital motor V8, which is compact but can spin at up to 110,000rpm, the Dyson V8 cord-free vacuum boasts powerful fade-free suction. And it weighs just 2.6kg.
“We’ve spent more than a decade and over £250million developing our small and powerful digital motors. Our latest generation motor sits at the heart of the Dyson V8 cord-free vacuum. It’s the result of 18 months research and development and 500,000 hours of testing. This motor enables the Dyson V8 cord-free vacuum cleaner to be powerful and versatile, transforming the way people clean their homes.” James Dyson

The Dyson V8 cord-free vacuum cleaner doesn’t just clean the floor, but quickly transforms between handheld and stick modes to clean down low, up high and everywhere in-between. Building on ten years of cord-free technology and motors expertise, Dyson V8 cord-free vacuums offer several key evolutions compared to their predecessors. Increased runtime, hygienic dirt ejection, even more powerful suction and less noise generated are among the advances.
Always ready for action
Dyson V8 vacuums have no cord. So there’s nothing to unravel, plug in, drag around and restrict your reach. Equipped with a docking and charging station, you can grab and clean whenever you need to.
Cleans carpets and hard floors
Powerful suction generated by the Dyson digital motor V8 is paired with Dyson cleaner head technology. A direct-drive cleaner head removes ground-in dirt and pet hair from carpets, while a soft roller cleaner head removes large debris and fine dust from hard floors simultaneously.
Weighs just 2.6kg
Inside Dyson cord-free vacuums, key components like the motor and battery are positioned near the hand. This shifts the centre of gravity, making the cleaning end of the vacuum much lighter, so it’s easy to clean up top and down below.
Hygienic dirt ejector
Dyson V8 cord-free vacuums feature a new bin emptying mechanism. As the bin is emptied, a rubber collar slides down the shroud, scraping dirt off. This enables the user to hygienically drive out trapped dust and debris in a single action, with no need to touch the dirt. Additionally, the bin has higher capacity than previous generation machines.
Notes to editors
- Battery runtime: is now up to 40 minutes, compared to 20 minutes on previous generation machines. Fade-free nickel-cobalt-aluminium batteries ensure suction starts strong and stays strong. A new battery runtime indicator gives the user a visual indication of cleaning time remaining.
- Acoustics: Dyson V8 cord-free vacuums are 50% quieter than previous generation machines.
- Max mode: offers higher suction for more difficult tasks, and is activated with a more intuitive new switch. It provides 115AW of suction, compared to100AW on previous generation machines.
- Whole machine filtration: captures allergens and expels cleaner air. A redesigned post-motor filter is standard on all Dyson V8 machines.
- Dyson-engineered tools: are included to remove dust and dirt wherever it’s hiding. Each one is designed for specific tasks – so you can remove dirt from all over the home. The mini motorised tool removes pet hair and ground-in dirt from stairs, in the car and on furniture. All tools feature a new quick release catch enabling the user to change smoothly between tasks.
- Tough construction: made from strong materials, selected for their durability and lightweight properties. The polycarbonate clear bin is made from the same durable material as riot shields.
Technology & Development
Dyson digital motor V8
The Dyson digital motor V8 runs at 425W, compared to the previous generation V6 motor’s 350W. The motor spins at up to 110,000rpm, and has upgraded drive electronics and software. Powered by new fade-free nickel-cobalt-aluminium batteries, the Dyson digital motor V8 delivers more power over a longer runtime.
Updating the motor took approximately 18 months of research and development work, with around 10-15 engineers working on the project at any given time. Approximately 500,000 hours of testing was carried out on the new motor’s different designs and parts, with 60-120 motors running in Dyson test labs at any given time. The Dyson digital motor V8 builds on more than a decade of motors development, with total investment of over £250million.
In 2016, Dyson will produce 8.8m digital motors – that’s approximately one every 3.5 seconds. 376 robots are used to assemble Dyson digital motors, as even the most dextrous human hand isn’t precise enough: the smallest manufacturing tolerance is +/- 3 microns, which is approximately a quarter of the thickness of a human hair.
Acoustic engineering
Dyson engineers have developed significant acoustic improvements to Dyson V8 cord-free vacuums: they generate 50% less noise compared to previous generation machines, without any compromise on suction power. The air flow paths through the machine have been reworked, to reduce the noise associated with air moving fast through tight spaces. The post-motor filter has been redesigned, so it helps to muffle sound. And acoustic felt and closed cell foam inside the machine absorbs vibrations, also reducing noise.
Hygienic dirt ejector
To enable the hygienic dirt ejection mechanism, which drives out trapped dust and debris in the same action as emptying the bin, Dyson engineers had to redesign the shroud. The shroud in previous generation machines was constructed from a fine mesh, but a silicon collar would have left dust behind as it slid down a mesh shroud. Therefore the shroud in Dyson V8 machines is constructed from chemically etched stainless steel, which has a smooth surface punctuated by approximately 15,000 holes that are 0.4mm in diameter.
Cleaner heads
Dyson engineers don’t stop at the vacuum itself – they are passionate about developing better cleaner heads and tools too. The direct-drive cleaner head has a powerful motor located inside the brush bar. This drives stiff nylon bristles deep into carpet pile to remove ground-in dirt and pet hair, while there are also soft anti-static carbon fibre filaments to remove fine dust from hard floors. The cleaner head offers 150% more brush bar power than the previous Dyson V6 Animal motorised head.
The soft-roller cleaner head removes large debris and fine dust from hard floors simultaneously. A larger roller covered in soft woven nylon traps large debris, whilst anti-static carbon fibre filaments remove fine dust. A direct-drive motor sits within the roller, allowing full-width, edge to edge cleaning.
Both cleaner heads are low profile, for reaching under furniture, and feature a swivel neck that pivots to reach into awkward places with a turn of the wrist.
