Disk Recovery

What’s your Favorite Backup Software?

By Faust Principe May 31, 2011

During my Information Technology (IT) management years way back year 2003 my favorite desktop and laptop backup software solution was Symantec’s Norton Ghost 2003 it was a popular choice among helpdesk and support technicians / users.

It was able to support earlier and mainstream operating systems like the defunct Windows 98 then all flavors Windows XP.

Upon seeing this – I jumped into the bandwagon – started to do standard deploying fresh images to new pc and laptop units, it was able to support and boot in a (Disk Operating System) DOS Mode environment with windows already pre-installed on a 32 bit file system – support and able to keep long filenames on the same machine with the same specs.

Able to do disk clones – same image copies transferred or copied to hard disks.

Now, things have change with the introduction of new operating systems like  Windows Vista and Windows 7, Norton Ghost 2003 wasn’t able to support these. Enter Acronis True Image 2011 – It’s a complete hard disk recovery solution that can backup any media – from pictures, movies, documents and system settings now includes a light netbook edition.

Good points to consider about this software from my own personal experience it can almost do what Norton Ghost 2003 but the downside it does not have the full capacity to do scheduled incremental backups like Acronis True Image 2011 when an  unforseen event happens – accidental file deletion, virus infection/s you’re able to recover it in seconds, plus it supports online backup too.
